Security of supply and safety

The role of maritime areas increasingly central to Finland’s overall security

Maritime regions play an important role in Finland’s overall security. The role of shipping and ports, among others, is central to security of supply, both on the coast and inland. Moreover, increasing energy production at sea contributes to achieving targets for national energy self-sufficiency and marine food production contributes to food security. In a heightened geopolitical context, national security and the presence of the defence forces in maritime areas are key.

Maritime spatial planning: Security of Supply of Maritime Industries and Overall Maritime Security study has been launched in autumn 2024 (to be carried out by Capful). The study will build an up-to-date and comprehensive situational picture of the security of supply and overall security of maritime industries in Finland’s maritime areas, examine alternative future scenarios for the maritime area from the perspective of security of supply and security, formulate an overall security vision for the maritime area and define the role of maritime spatial planning in achieving this vision.

This work is expected to be completed in spring 2025. The content of this page will be further developed at a later stage.
